No matter what path you're taking or have taken, use your experiences as a library. Try to remember the bad times as well as the good because they'll come in handy some day if you really want to be a great actor. All of your life is one big rehearsal for the roles you'll be playing. Thinking this way has really smoothed any rough edges I would have felt otherwise.
My Voice Over History:
My voice over career started in Elementary school when I was told I could be the announcer and announce the songs the choir was about to sing. Little did I know then it was because I couldn't sing. However, it did make a lasting impression on me, the feel of the mic, the thundering applause, the blinding lights. I was hooked. Since then I've joined AFTRA and have been the announcer for a national non-smoking campaign, a martian landing to check out the Boston Museum of Science, and many more... including a singer performing original songs for a musical production that was shopped around in the mail to a large variety of French producers. The poor writer was probably tone deaf but I sure had a blast recording! Yes, I have lived in France for many years and Greece for a couple years. My French is better than my Greek, but in either place, the main language spoken was English.
Think about your life and how it could relate to making you a better actor, a more well rounded person, somebody with varied experiences...
Relevant Skills for Acting:
Oh it's good to ask this question. Why hire a person to read about finance when they can't even pronounce it, right? Well fear not my friend, for I have been the proud owner of a Series 7. That means I was once a Financial Advisor. That job actually helped me in many industrial films. As an advisor, I went after a rather small target market, but one I knew well...the independent film maker in Boston. Boy did I learn a lot during their conventions. Photography is something I dabble in professionally as well as for fun. Comedy is in my blood. Salt is not. However I have many a nautical mile under my belt, seeing that I was a yacht broker and made deliveries of sailing catamarans all throughout the Caribbean and the US East Coast. The travel bug has not only bitten me but has become a welcome parasite and I've been all over Europe and to Africa and Venezuela and Canada and all over the US. My son and I are healthy and happy. Life has been good to me.
